Schmalkalden had something of a notgeld tradition worth noting: the town was home to Feodor Wilisch, a local printer who supplied emergency currency to multiple issuers across the Herrschaft rather than relying on the Leipzig or Berlin trade printers that dominated the larger series. This note is therefore both issued by and produced within the same small district — an unusual degree of local self-sufficiency in a period when most Kleingeldersatz was farmed out.

Kurt Jäckel's involvement as designer is documented but his wider career is thin in the record. The 1921 date places this in the second wave of German notgeld, after the initial postwar chaos but well before hyperinflation made small-denomination paper truly worthless.
