| Obverse description | The central vignette presents a polychrome letterpress view of the Stiftskirche St. Cyriaci as seen from the Bückeberg, with the Romanesque collegiate church rising above a foreground of red-roofed town buildings set against wooded Harz hillsides. The denomination '50 Pfennig' appears in bold Gothic script at each of the four corners within a blue ruled border, while the heading 'Notgeldschein der Stadt Gernrode-Harz' is printed in large blackletter across the top panel. The lower margin carries the issue date of 21 Oktober 1921, a serial number, the issuing authority 'Der Magistrat', and a manuscript signature, with the printer's and artist's imprints in small type beneath the frame. |

A three-part quotation from Goethe runs across the upper register in banner cartouches, and descriptive captions in blackletter script are placed beneath each panel. |
