Saalfeld's 1921 Notgeld issue was one of thousands printed by German municipalities during the postwar inflationary spiral, when chronic coin shortages forced local governments to produce their own fractional currency. The Wiedemannsche Druckerei AG was a local Thuringian press — the note was designed, printed, and issued entirely within the same small city, an unusually self-contained production for the period.
Saalfeld issues from this wave tend to circulate modestly among regional Notgeld collectors, with the town's proximity to the Saale valley giving the series a minor geographic identity. Printing quality from Wiedemann varies across denominations.
