Am 9. August 1554 erschien Küster mit etwa 100 Mann in Ballenstedt. Ein armer Mann wurde erschlagen, andere wurden schwer verwundet, über 60 Pferde geraubt. Des Küsters Haus wurde niedergebrannt, er selbst fortgeschleppt. Im ganzen Harze wurde der Räuber gefürchtet. Er war der Schrecken der Kinder, der Held der Spinnstuben.
