Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is printed in blue, green, and warm orange tones, with a large central oval vignette portraying a pastoral scene: a herdsman stands at left holding a staff while cattle graze in a flat marsh landscape under a vivid sunset sky, with a church steeple silhouetted on the horizon. The oval is framed by an elaborate scrollwork border incorporating foliate and wave motifs in blue, with the numeral 50 repeated in each of the four corners in bold blue figures. The outer border consists of a green oak-leaf and acorn garland, lending the composition a distinctly regional, Schleswig character.

Opmerkingen

Tondern — known today as Tønder in southern Denmark — issued this note in the immediate aftermath of the 1920 Schleswig plebiscite, which returned the northern zone to Danish sovereignty. The town itself fell just inside the Danish border, meaning notgeld issued by the Magistrat in early 1920 appeared at exactly the moment local German municipal authority was being wound down and transferred. Whether this note circulated before or after the formal handover on 15 June 1920 is a question the date alone cannot settle.

The single signature, Paulsen, is an unresolved attribution — common enough in Schleswig borderland notgeld, where clerical and mayoral signatories were not always formally documented.
