Obverse description The upper portion carries a bold Gothic-script title reading 'Notgeld der Stadt Sonneberg S.M.' above a central vignette of a half-timbered rural house rendered in a woodcut-style bicolour print in black and red. Flanking the central vignette are two decorative panels in red: on the left, a stylised sword-and-wings heraldic device, and on the right, a doll figure within an oval medallion surmounted by three shield emblems, both set against foliate ornamental backgrounds. The lower register contains a ruled serial number panel with signature lines captioned 'Der Magistrat:' at left and 'Der Gemeinderath:' at right, with the place-and-date inscription 'Sonneberg, am 20. Februar 1920' centred above, and the printer's imprint 'GEBR. PARCUS, MÜNCHEN.' at the foot.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a vivid red, black, and olive-tan colour scheme. A central oval vignette presents Father Christmas in a star-spangled red robe carrying a decorated Christmas tree and a hobby horse, with a toy soldier figure at his side, set against an olive-toned star-scattered ground. The oval is flanked left and right by bold numerals '50' in white outline, and the denomination inscription 'fünfzig Pfennig' in large red Gothic lettering runs across the lower half. The surrounding field is filled with a dense black foliate arabesque pattern incorporating motifs of toys — including a rocking horse, drum, and other playthings — directly referencing Sonneberg's renowned toy-manufacturing industry.
