Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a large Gothic-script inscription reading "Notgeld der Stadt Detmold" across the upper portion, flanked on each side by tall vertical panels of stylised red and grey foliate ornament enclosing the denomination numeral "50 Pfg" in shield cartouches. The city arms of Detmold — a crenellated gatehouse on a red field with a six-petal rose at centre — occupy a central heraldic vignette in red, grey, and black letterpress. A lower text panel carries the date 1920, serial number, a redemption clause in red Gothic script, and two manuscript signatures, with the printer's imprint along the bottom margin.

Reverse description The reverse presents a bold silhouette vignette set within a ruled rectangular frame, illustrating a scene referencing the ancient Battle of the Teutoburg Forest: a struggling figure — evoking the Roman general Varus — grappling with a large creature in a swamp, with birds of prey overhead and military detritus scattered below. Flanking the central image are vertical panels of trophies and weapons in grey and red, each incorporating a red shield with the numeral "50". A four-line German verse in sans-serif capitals runs above and below the central vignette, and an artist's signature appears in the upper left of the image panel.
