Aschersleben's 1920 Notgeld issue is one of several thousand municipal emergency notes produced during the hyperinflationary spiral that followed Germany's defeat in World War I. Small-denomination Kleingeldscheine like this one filled the vacuum left by hoarded coins — by 1920, even 50 Pfennig in metal had effectively vanished from everyday commerce.
The printer "Bume" remains poorly documented in the Notgeld literature; likely a regional jobbing printer rather than one of the specialist houses that handled larger municipal contracts.
