Neustrelitz served as the capital of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, one of Germany's smallest and most short-lived republican entities — it was absorbed into Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1934. This Notgeld issue came from the city council itself rather than a savings bank or chamber of commerce, which was less common; most municipal emergency currency of the period was coordinated through local business associations. Printed locally by Bohls Nachfolger, the note never traveled far — Neustrelitz had a population of roughly 12,000, and these small-denomination pieces were produced strictly for local retail shortfall.
