Frankfurt an der Oder issued this 50 Pfennig note in 1919 as Notgeld — emergency municipal currency produced to address the chronic small-change shortage that plagued Germany in the immediate postwar period. The central government's inability to supply sufficient coinage left hundreds of municipalities printing their own fractional notes, creating a patchwork of locally issued paper that technically held no legal tender status outside the issuing town's own commerce.
Frankfurt an der Oder's Magistrat series is not among the elaborately printed collector-oriented Notgeld that flooded the market from 1920 onward. This is strictly functional issue — produced to circulate, not to be saved.
