Hermsdorf in Saxe-Altenburg issued this note as part of the vast Kleingeldersatz wave that swept Germany following the First World War, when hoarding of metal coinage left small transactions nearly impossible. Municipal notgeld of this type was authorised locally rather than centrally, which means printing quality, design choices, and even the precise issuing authority name varied enormously from town to town — and from run to run within the same town.
Hermsdorf's issues are modestly collected today, more for regional completeness than rarity. The 1919 date places this squarely in the first wave of necessity issues, before the later "series notgeld" produced purely for the collector market began flooding the trade from 1920 onward.
