Emmerich, a Rhine crossing town on the Dutch-German border, issued this 50 Pfennig Notgeld in 1918 under the same wartime pressures that drove hundreds of German municipalities to print their own emergency small-denomination paper — the shortage of metal coinage had become acute by the middle of the war, with copper and nickel diverted to military production. Municipal authorities were authorized to fill the gap locally, and most issues were backed by little more than civic goodwill.
Emmerich's proximity to the Netherlands gave it an unusual commercial character for a small Rhenish town, though its Notgeld issues are not among the more artistically ambitious of the period.
