Opmerkingen

Rendsburg's 1918 Kleingeldscheine emerged from the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany as the war economy absorbed copper, nickel, and zinc. Municipal authorities across the Reich were authorized to issue low-denomination emergency paper — Notgeld in the strictest sense — to keep small transactions functioning when official coinage had effectively disappeared from circulation.

Rendsburg sits at the junction of the Kiel Canal and the Schleswig-Holstein interior, a garrison town with sustained commercial activity that made the shortage genuinely disruptive rather than merely inconvenient. The city's 50 Pfennig issue was a practical stop-gap, not a commemorative exercise — the decorative Notgeld craze came later, in 1921–22.
