Rostocker Bank issued this Notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial monetary system buckled under wartime strain — small-denomination coins had largely vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted, leaving a vacuum that municipal and private issuers across Germany rushed to fill with emergency paper. Rostock's solution was printed locally by Adlers Erben GmbH, a Rostock firm, giving this note an unusually tight geographic unity between issuer, printer, and intended circulation area.
The 1918 municipal Notgeld issues were generally demonetized quickly once Reichsbank-backed coinage returned in the early 1920s, and many were never redeemed — kept as curiosities rather than spent.
