The hoarding of metal coinage, accelerated by wartime metal requisitions, left local commerce almost entirely dependent on notgeld series like this one. Schaar & Dathe, a local Trier printing firm, handled production in-house, which is why the design quality across Trier's issues varies more than notgeld printed by specialist houses such as Giesecke & Devrient.

The validity window of 1918–1921 spans the armistice, the occupation of the Rhineland by Allied forces, and the early hyperinflationary period — three distinct monetary climates in which a 50 Pfennig note carried very different purchasing weight.
