Trier's municipal administration began issuing Kleingeldscheine — small-denomination emergency paper — during the coin shortage that gripped Germany from around 1916 onward. The hoarding of metal coinage, accelerated by wartime metal requisitions, left local commerce almost entirely dependent on notgeld series like this one. Schaar & Dathe, a local Trier printing firm, handled production in-house, which is why the design quality across Trier's issues varies more than notgeld printed by specialist houses such as Giesecke & Devrient.
The validity window of 1918–1921 spans the armistice, the occupation of the Rhineland by Allied forces, and the early hyperinflationary period — three distinct monetary climates in which a 50 Pfennig note carried very different purchasing weight.
