Bad Nauheim's 1917 Notgeld issue belongs to the earliest wave of municipal emergency currency, predating the chaotic mass production of 1921–22 by several years. The city — a prosperous spa town in Hesse — had the means and the local connections to commission Carl Naumann's Druckerei in Frankfurt rather than rely on whatever printer the wartime authorities might have assigned.
