| Obverse description | Cream and rose-red Notgeld note with a decorative dark border incorporating stylised foliate corner ornaments. A central oval vignette renders the local Pastorat (parsonage) in letterpress, showing a multi-storey brick building flanked by large trees, with the caption 'Pastorat' at lower right of the vignette. The arc inscription 'GUTSCHEIN DER GEMEINDEN QUERN' spans the upper field, while denomination roundels reading '50 PFENNIG' appear at lower left and lower right. Below the vignette the validity clause 'Gültig bis 30. Sept. 1921' is printed, accompanied by two manuscript signatures and a serial number prefixed 'No'. |

Quern is a tiny parish in Schleswig, the region that had just returned to Germany following the 1920 plebiscite — South Schleswig voted to remain German while North Schleswig joined Denmark. This Notgeld issue almost certainly reflects the administrative and monetary disruption that followed the border realignment, with small municipalities scrambling to cover small-change shortages while the national economy deteriorated.
Printed by Heinrich Appel in nearby Süderbrarup, a local printer serving the rural Angeln district rather than one of the major Notgeld houses. The reference number suggests multiple variants exist within the series.
