Würzburg's city magistrate issued Kleingeldscheine — small-change emergency notes — during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the early World War I years, when hoarding stripped silver and even copper from everyday commerce almost overnight. H. Stürtz had been the university press in Würzburg since the nineteenth century, which made it the obvious local choice when municipal authorities needed a printer they could trust and reach quickly.
Being printed and issued within the same city is worth noting: many German Notgeld of this period were printed elsewhere, then shipped to the issuing municipality. This one never left Würzburg.
