Canth — now Kąty Wrocławskie in southwestern Poland — was a small Lower Silesian market town, and like hundreds of similar municipalities in 1920 Germany, its savings bank issued its own emergency currency when the national coin shortage made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. This was Notgeld in its most mundane, administrative form: a local institution filling a gap that Berlin could not.
The Grabowski reference suffix "9/9" indicates this is the final plate position in a nine-note sheet, a detail that occasionally shows as slightly heavier ink coverage at the margins due to edge pressure during printing.
