Beschrijving keerzijde Large numeral 50 dominates the central field, with the denomination PESOS and the issue year 1971 inscribed below in two lines. To the left, a tall quill feather pen rises diagonally, symbolising Rodó's literary legacy, and rests against an open book rendered in low relief at the base. The engraver's signature F. ORELLANA P. appears along the left inner rim. The overall composition is clean and uncluttered, with ample field space framing the bold central numerals.

Aanvullende informatie

Rodó died in 1917 in Palermo, largely forgotten by the wider world, but his 1900 essay Ariel had by mid-century become foundational reading across Latin American universities — a philosophical rebuke of North American materialism that aged into something of a secular scripture for the left. Uruguay's decision to put him on coinage in 1971 came at a moment of acute political crisis, with the Tupamaros insurgency at its peak and the country sliding toward the military intervention that would arrive in 1973. The pattern was never adopted for circulation.
