Obverse description Facing bust of José Enrique Rodó, the Uruguayan essayist and philosopher, depicted with characteristic mustache and spectacles, rendered in moderate relief with fine portrait detail. The circular legend REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY runs along the upper periphery. The birth and death years 1871 and 1917 appear in the lower field flanking the portrait, with the name RODO inscribed prominently along the lower rim. The engraving is executed in a naturalistic style characteristic of mid-twentieth-century Latin American commemorative coinage.
