The Banco Nacional of Argentina — not to be confused with the later Banco Nacional founded in 1891 — operated under a federal charter granted in 1872, part of a broader effort to consolidate provincial banking chaos under a single national institution. It failed within a decade, undone by overlending and political exposure, and was liquidated in 1876. Notes from this issuer had an exceptionally short window of legitimate circulation.
ABNC produced the plates in New York, as they did for most Argentine institutional paper of the period. The PS# catalog placement indicates this is a Specialized Pick reference for South American issues — the 656 position within that sequence suggests a higher-denomination note from a series that saw limited release before the bank's collapse made redemption uncertain.
