Cuba's first railway, inaugurated in November 1837, predated Spain's own domestic rail network by nearly a decade — a fact that made the Havana–Güines line a source of considerable imperial pride and, later, Cuban national identity. The line was built primarily to move sugar from inland plantations to the coast, its financing driven entirely by the colony's planter class rather than the Spanish crown.
