Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar founded the first seven Spanish settlements in Cuba beginning in 1511, making him the island's original colonial governor — a figure the revolutionary Cuban state would otherwise have little interest in celebrating. This coin belongs to a series issued in the early 1990s when Cuba, facing the collapse of Soviet subsidies and desperate for hard currency, aggressively targeted the international bullion and numismatic collector market.
