Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicted as a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion displays a rising sun over a key between two promontories, the middle section bears a horizontal key, and the lower right quarter features a royal palm tree. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap bearing a star and flanked on either side by laurel and oak branches bound at the base. The arc legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA curves along the upper rim, while the denomination 50 PESOS appears in the lower field. The fineness designation AG 0.999 and weight indicator 5 OZ are inscribed on the right and left sides respectively, with a rope-twist border encircling the entire design.

Reverse description A Cuban tody (Todus multicolor), known locally as the cartacuba, is depicted perched on a brown branch at centre, rendered in polychrome enamel with vivid naturalistic colouring: a dark green head and upperparts, white underparts, a bright red throat patch, blue and pink lateral markings, and yellow undertail coverts. Green foliage occupies the right background, and a stylised green ground cover fills the lower field. The curved legend FAUNA DEL CARIBE arcs across the upper rim, with the species name CARTACUBA continuing along the right side. The date 1996 appears in the lower right field, accompanied by a small mint mark.
