Cuba's outsized commemorative silver program of the late 1980s and early 1990s targeted the approaching quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 landing, and this 155.5-gram piece was among the most ambitious in that run. Havana had both ideological and hard-currency reasons to mint it: foreign numismatic sales generated dollars the embargo made scarce, while the Columbus anniversary gave socialist Cuba an unlikely but commercially viable hook into the Western collector market.
The JMA reference places it firmly within the Cuban export coinage series managed through the Joyería La Maison network.
