The Provincia de Buenos Ayres operated its own monetary system in parallel with, and often in open rivalry to, the Confederation's federal authorities — a tension that persisted well into the 1860s even after formal unification. The American Bank Note Company won a succession of contracts with Argentine provincial and national issuers during this period, outcompeting European firms on turnaround and security engraving.
