To the left, the obverse of the cross pattée is shown suspended from its characteristic V-shaped suspender bar with laurel-leaf brooch bar above; the central medallion bears a crowned lion passant guardant above the scroll inscribed FOR VALOUR. To the right, the reverse of the medal is shown as a rayed star design with a circular central boss inscribed 29. JAN 1858., referencing the date of the first investiture.
