Additional information

HMS Dido was a light cruiser, not a battleship — a distinction worth noting given the coin's catalog description. She led the Dido class, designed in the late 1930s as anti-aircraft escorts, and served extensively in the Mediterranean during some of the war's most punishing naval campaigns, including the evacuation of Crete in 1941 where she took a bomb hit to a forward turret. The Isle of Man has a long habit of issuing VE Day commemoratives under loose numismatic licensing arrangements, producing multiple gold proofs annually for the collector market rather than any circulatory purpose.
