The Snowman 50p was first issued in 2004 to mark the 30th anniversary of Raymond Briggs' illustrated book, which was published in 1978 and adapted into the animated film in 1982 — the latter now so embedded in British television tradition that its annual broadcast has aired almost every Christmas since. The 2018 restrike continues that commemorative thread without significant design alteration.
Struck in sterling on the Royal Mint's proof specification, the .925 standard here matches the alloy used across the broader collector 50p programme rather than the fine silver (.999) used in some premium issues of the same period.
