Reverse description A vibrant full-colour scene inspired by Raymond Briggs' classic animated film The Snowman, as interpreted by designer Natasha Ratcliffe. The Snowman, wearing his characteristic green hat and scarf with an orange button nose, is depicted in joyful flight above a snowy landscape, accompanied by a young boy dressed in a purple jacket and red hat. The scene is set against a deep blue nocturnal sky filled with falling snowflakes, with a illuminated pier — evoking Brighton's West Pier — visible in the lower portion of the field. The engraver's initials N.R. appear in the lower right of the field. The coloured design fills the entire heptagonal field to the raised rim.

Additional information

The Snowman 50p was first issued in 2004 to mark the 30th anniversary of Raymond Briggs' illustrated book, which was published in 1978 and adapted into the animated film in 1982 — the latter now so embedded in British television tradition that its annual broadcast has aired almost every Christmas since. The 2018 restrike continues that commemorative thread without significant design alteration.

Struck in sterling on the Royal Mint's proof specification, the .925 standard here matches the alloy used across the broader collector 50p programme rather than the fine silver (.999) used in some premium issues of the same period.
