HMS Victory is best known as Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar in 1805, but the ship had already been in service for three decades by then — launched at Chatham in 1765, she saw action at the Battle of Cape Spartel and the relief of Gibraltar before Trafalgar made her name permanent. The "struck by musket ball" finish references the hail of French and Spanish small-arms fire that swept her decks during the engagement, killing Nelson on the quarterdeck at approximately 1:15 in the afternoon.
Jersey's connection to the Napoleonic period is direct — the island repelled a French invasion in 1781.
