HMS Victory entered service in 1778 but is most associated with the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805, where Nelson was struck by a French sharpshooter's musket ball from the rigging of the Redoutable and died below decks before the engagement concluded. Victory still exists — she remains afloat in dry dock at Portsmouth, the oldest commissioned warship in the world still on the naval register.
