HMS Victory entered service in 1778 but is most associated with the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805, where Nelson was struck by a French sharpshooter's musket ball from the rigging of the Redoutable and died below decks before the engagement concluded. Victory still exists — she remains afloat in dry dock at Portsmouth, the oldest commissioned warship in the world still on the naval register.
Jersey has issued numerous commemorative 50p pieces under royal warrant, and this silver variant of KM#434a is the collector-grade companion to a base-metal circulation issue. The .925 fineness places it firmly in the gift and commemorative market rather than anything approaching everyday use.
