Tynwald Day, held annually on July 5th at St John's, is among the oldest continuous parliamentary ceremonies in the world — the Manx parliament traces its Norse origins to around 979 AD, making 1979 its presumed millennial anniversary. This coin was issued specifically to mark that occasion. The Isle of Man Post Office Authority had gained control of the island's coinage from the Royal Mint only three years earlier, and the Pobjoy Mint struck this piece under that relatively new arrangement.
