Issued to mark the fortieth anniversary of Churchill's death, this coin appeared the same year the Falkland Islands were quietly asserting their distinct political identity — a relationship with Britain that Churchill himself had no particular association with, though the Islands' defense in 1982 owed something to the postwar strategic architecture he helped shape. The "Statesman" designation distinguishes this from companion issues in the series labeling him as Soldier, Artist, and Nobel Laureate.
