The composition features overlapping representations of pre-decimal coinage — including fragments of a shilling, halfpenny, and other coins bearing Britannia, heraldic lions, and floral emblems — arranged as a dynamic collage surrounding a central heptagonal cartouche. Within the cartouche, the inscription 1971 / DECIMAL / DAY is prominently displayed in raised lettering. The engraver's initials DME appear to the lower right of the field. |
