Concorde first flew on 2 March 1969, a French-led test flight out of Toulouse that beat the British-operated prototype by nearly a month — a detail that still quietly irritates aviation historians on certain sides of the Channel. The 50th anniversary in 2019 prompted a wave of commemorative issues, Guernsey among the more prolific producers.
The Anglo-French supersonic program cost an estimated £1.3 billion over its development, roughly ten times original projections, underwritten entirely by taxpayers after commercial interest collapsed in the early 1960s.
