The mirror-like proof fields provide a striking contrast to the frosted devices, enhancing the sculptural quality of the portrait. | 裏面の説明 | The reverse, designed by Dominique Evans, commemorates the 50th anniversary of Decimal Day (15 February 1971) with a complex, layered composition evoking the pre-decimal coinage that was replaced. Fragments of pre-decimal coins are depicted in overlapping arcs filling the heptagonal field, with legible portions of legends including SHILLING and HALF visible, alongside imagery of Britannia helmeted in profile, a crowned Tudor rose, a wren, and heraldic shield elements. At the centre, a raised heptagonal cartouche bearing the inscription 1971 DECIMAL DAY in three lines serves as the focal point of the design. The engraver's initials DME appear in the lower right field. The deeply frosted devices against polished proof fields accentuate the intricate multi-layered composition. |
