Reverse description The Arms of Dublin City occupy the central field, displaying a shield bearing three flaming castles — two in chief and one in base — surmounted by the civic helm with a fur-trimmed cap of maintenance, flanked by a mace and sword as supporters. A decorative ribbon banner below the shield carries the bilingual millennium inscription. The commemorative dates 988 and 1988 flank the shield at mid-field, denoting the city's millennium. The denomination 50p appears in the upper field above the arms.

Additional information

Dublin's millennium in 1988 was itself a contested date — the city's founding year of 988 AD rests on a single Viking assembly reference, and historians have argued the choice was as much civic marketing as historical record. The Irish government pressed ahead regardless, and this fifty pence became the commemorative vehicle for a celebration that was, by any measure, more political than archaeological.
