Dublin's millennium in 1988 was itself a contested date — the city's founding year of 988 AD rests on a single Viking assembly reference, and historians have argued the choice was as much civic marketing as historical record. The Irish government pressed ahead regardless, and this fifty pence became the commemorative vehicle for a celebration that was, by any measure, more political than archaeological.
