VE-Day on 8 May 1945 held particular weight in Guernsey: the island had been under German military occupation since June 1940, one of the only British territories to be so, and liberation came a day early — 9 May 1945 — a date still marked as a public holiday in the Bailiwick. Guernsey issues commemorating this event therefore carry a local historical resonance that equivalent mainland British pieces do not.
The gold plating on this issue is selective rather than full-field, a technique increasingly common in Royal Mint and Crown Dependency commemoratives from the 2020s onward.
