The Wombles, created by Elisabeth Beresford in 1968 after she misheard her daughter pronounce "Wimbledon Common," became a BBC stop-motion staple in the early 1970s and an unlikely vehicle for a genuine pop career — the show's theme music reached the UK singles charts multiple times.
