Jersey has issued commemorative 50 pence pieces with some regularity, but the D-Day series carries particular local weight — the island was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945, one of the longest occupations of British territory in the war. Spitfire patrols over the Channel were among the few visible signs to islanders that the war was still being fought on their behalf.
