The Battle of Britain lasted from July to October 1940, during which RAF Fighter Command — chronically short of pilots and increasingly reliant on Commonwealth and Polish volunteers — held off the Luftwaffe long enough to make a German invasion logistically impossible. Guernsey itself was occupied by German forces from June 1940 and remained so until May 1945, making the island's decision to issue Battle of Britain commemoratives carry an edge that purely metropolitan British issues lack.
The five-ounce silver format with selective gilding has become the dominant vehicle for British commemorative collector issues in the 2020s, produced almost exclusively for the secondary market rather than circulation.
