Guernsey's position in the Battle of Britain narrative is uncomfortable history: the island was evacuated and then occupied by German forces from June 1940, making it the only British territory to fall under Nazi occupation during the war. The RAF fought to defend a homeland that included a Channel Island already lost. This piece enters a well-saturated commemorative market — the 84th anniversary of the battle carries no particular significance, and gold-plated copper-nickel issues from Crown dependencies have proliferated to the point of collector fatigue.
