The Jaina series takes its name from the island site off the Campeche coast where hundreds of Maya ceramic figurines were excavated from burial contexts — objects that became defining references for Classic Maya anthropomorphic art. Mexico's bullion program of the early 1990s drew on pre-Columbian iconography as a deliberate counterpoint to the American Gold Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf, positioning national archaeological heritage as the mint's differentiating brand strategy.
The 1994 date places this coin in the year the Zapatista uprising began and the peso crisis was months away from erupting — neither event affected mintage schedules, but surviving examples entered a secondary market defined almost immediately by currency collapse.
