Issued to mark the centenary of Sun Yat-sen's birth, this was Taiwan's first commemorative silver coin under the Republic of China government on the island — a government that still formally claimed to represent all of China. The timing carried pointed political weight: the mainland PRC had held its own commemorations in 1956, and Taipei's 1965 issue was, in part, a counter-assertion of legitimacy over the founding father's memory.
Mintage was modest, and the coins saw little actual circulation.
