Additional information

Hanko — Hangö in Swedish — occupies a peculiar place in Finnish memory: the peninsula was leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base under the 1940 Moscow Peace Treaty, a humiliating concession forced after the Winter War. Soviet forces evacuated in late 1941 as German pressure mounted, and Finland quietly reclaimed it. This collector issue marks the town's 200th anniversary as an officially chartered city, granted in 1823 under Russian imperial administration when Finland was still a Grand Duchy.

The 50 markkaa denomination is purely nominal — Finland adopted the euro in 2002.
